Manchester United lose Paul Pogba to injury while limping to unconvincing victory over Rostov

Image
Manchester United 1 Rostov 0 (agg: 2-1):  Juan Mata's second-half strike was one of the few highlights in a drab, dour game at Old Trafford Three days on from a miserable coach journey home from FA Cup defeat at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho and Manchester United encountered another bus, this one parked by the Russian side FC Rostov, before Juan Mata’s 10th goal of the season carried them through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League. United thus joined Leicester City as the only Premier League representatives in the last eight of Europe’s two tournaments although it may have come at a cost, with world record signing Paul Pogba limping out of the action early in the second half with an apparent hamstring problem and Daley Blind suffering concussion. Perhaps the Pogba injury, and a patchy second half performance from United, could be put down to that “promenade on the M6,” as Mourinho quaintly described a return from Stamford Bridge that ended at 4am on Tu...

GARETH SOUTHGATE PICKS AN INTELLIGENT SQUAD BUT THE NEW TALISMEN ENGLAND HOPED FOR ARE YET TO ARRIVE

Image
There is a fundamental difference between Gareth Southgate and his predecessors: that much was evident when Wayne Rooney’s name did not appear on his first England squad sheet on Thursday. The new permanent manager did not try to dress the decision up in pretty words about fitness. He admitted in his press conference that, on the basis of a telephone conversation with Rooney, the 30-year-old may well play this weekend. He simply hadn’t made the cut. It is only nine months since Roy Hodgson was describing the captain as the motivational core of the squad, the go-to man when speeches were deemed necessary - and only six months since Sam Allardyce memorably told us that “Wayne plays where he wants” after his solitary game at the helm. This omission felt bold and significant when it came. The same characteristics applied to the unexpected elements of the group picked to play Germany in Dortmund next Wednesday and Lithuania at Wembley, four days later. The enlightened recall of Je...

This very horrific..It was a gory sight at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Federal Teaching Hospital (FETHA), Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, as an 8-month-old baby boy was stabbed by his reportedly mentally-sick mother and brought into the ward for surgery with the knife still stuck in the boy’s abdomen. Full details of the incident couldn’t be obtained, as the suspect, who was said to be a wife of a serving police Sergeant, was said to have been taken to a psychiatric hospital for treatment, it was gathered that the incident happened at the police barracks, Abakaliki The woman who allegedly has periodic major mental disorder pierced her baby’s stomach with kitchen knife and left the knife stuck in the baby’s stomach when somebody saw it and raised the alarm that attracted neigbours. Chief Medical Director of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Dr. Emeka Ogar, said the baby had been operated upon and the surgery was successful and expressed shock at the incident.
