Territory A member of the falconets Mary Ologbosere has been rushed to the
traumatic unit of a hospital in the Federal Capital Territory after she
discovered the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will not pay the players on
arrival from the U-20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea.
Despite a superb comeback by the falconets to defeat Spain 2 – 1 in their last
group game at the ongoing FIFA u20 Womens World Cup in New Papua Guinea,
Nigeria failed to go through to the knockout stage. The team returned to the
country on Wednesday, November 23, but were all shocked when they were each
paid a miserly N10,000 to return to their various homes. The 18-year-old Mary
who lost her father in the cause of the competition was eagerly awaited by
relatives return in order to begin burial preparations.
On return, the bereaved player reportedly cried all through the night and had
to be taken to the traumatic unit of an Abuja hospital. “She is totally
shattered by this heartless treatment,” Vanguard quoted a team official at the
Serob Legacy Hotel. “It’s truly a pathetic case. The N10,000 paid each player
was the only money they received from the NFF since they opened training camp
for the World Cup earlier this year. “The team have vowed not to leave the
hotel they were booked into until they have got their cash. Recall that the
falconets also came from a goal down to beat Canada in their second group game.
Japan and Spain made it through on goals difference despite having six points
each as well as Nigeria. This is not the first time of such issues involving
the NFF and Nigerian teams. When the golden eaglets won the record fifth U-17
World Cup, it would be recalled that each of the players were alleged to have
been handed a meagre sum of N20,000 each
